INGREDIENTS:
No. 1 Slim dried rehmannia root
No. 2 Liquorice
No. 3 Ginseng
No. 4 Rhubarb
No. 5 Mirabilite
No. 6 Scrophularia root
No. 7 Ophiopogon root
No. 8 Chinese angelica root
No. 9 Sea cucumber
No. 10 Ginger juice

INDICATIONS: Syndrome of the accumulation of heat accompanied by weakened body resistance with such symptoms as constipation, abdominal fullness and distension, mental fatigue, shortness of breath, dryness of the mouth and throat, parched or chapped lips with fissures on the tongue, dry scorched yellow or black tongue fur.
Equally, this recipe can be modified to treat paralytic, simple and obliterative intestinal obstruction, habitual constipation, epidemic or non-epidemic febrile diseases in their climax marked by interior excess and accumulation of heat, and effective for those with deficiency of the vital qi and massive loss of yin and blood.

CAUTIONS: Ginseng should be decocted alone, and then poured into the decoction of other ingredients before intake.

Ten Chinese-dates Decoction

INGREDIENTS:
No. 1 Parched genkwa
No. 2 Kansui root
No. 3 Knoxia root
All the above drugs should be equal in dosage.

INDICATIONS: Pleural effusion and edema, manifested by pain in the chest and hypochondrium when coughing or spitting, hardness and stuffiness in the epigastrium, retching, shortness of breath, headache with halo, difficult respiration due to pain in the thorax and back, slippery coating on the tongue, sunken and taut pulse; or edema which is more serious in the lower part of the body, abdominal fullness, dyspnea, difficulty in urination and defecation.
Moreover, the modified recipe is also used to treat hydrothorax, ascites and edema caused by exudative pleurisy, hepatic cirrhosis, acute pancreatitis, chronic nephritis and nephrotic syndrome, etc.; or simple intestinal obstruction, acute gastric dilatation and others that are ascribed to strong body resistance with exuberance of pathogenic factors.

CAUTIONS;
1. This recipe is advisable only to those who have excessive fluid and are in stout constitution. When the rapid purgation occurs, the administration must be withdrawn. If the purgation is not thorough, which suggests incomplete removal of fluid retention, the administration may be continued depending on the health condition.
2. If the purgation is required for patients with excessiveness of pathogen and general debility, there are several methods available in accordance with the patient's conditions, such as the method of administering medicines to drive out the pathogenic factors first and then give tonics for recuperation, the method of administering tonics first to improve the patient's general condition and then give drastic drugs to drive out pathogens, and the method of administering medicines to drive out invading pathogens and give tonics to reinforce the body resistance at the same time. When the patient's general condition takes a favourable turn, the treatment should be aimed at warming and replenishing the kidney-qi and recuperating the spleen and stomach.
3. It is never administered for pregnant women and the patients with weak health condition without excessiveness of pathogens.

INDICATIONS: Syndrome of constipation due to intestinal dryness manifested as frequency of urination, dry stool, or constipation due to dehydration after febrile diseases, and habitual constipation.
This recipe can equally be adapted for the treatment of constipation caused by intestinal dryness due to over-sweating in the febrile diseases, habitual constipation marked by rabbit-stool-like feces.

CAUTIONS:
1. The recipe should be administered with great care for the aged and the weak or those with constipation caused by exhaustion of body fluid and blood dryness without pathogenic heat.
2. It is not advisable for the pregnant women.

Decoction for Warming Spleen

INGREDIENTS:
No. 1 Rhubarb
No. 2 Prepared aconite root
No. 3 Dried ginger
No. 4 Ginseng
No. 5 Liquorice

INDICATIONS: Constipation caused by accumulation of cold due to hypofunction of the spleen, marked by periumbilical cold-pain which will be alleviated with a warm hand on the region; also may be used to treat protracted diarrhea accompanied by abdominal pain, epigastric fullness, cold extremities, white tongue fur, deep and taut pulse.
Equally, the recipe can also be modified to treat the following cases; constipation due to insufficiency of yang as seen in chronic gastritis, enteritis and other chronic illnesses; or chronic diarrhea due to insufficiency of yang as seen in the cases of chronic dysentery, chronic ulcerative colitis, intestinal tuberculosis, etc.

CAUTIONS: Prepared aconite root should be decocted for 30 to 60 minutes in water prior to other ingredients so as to lessen its toxicity, while rhubarb should be added into the decoction posterior to all other ingredients lest its purgative action should be reduced.

INGREDIENTS:
No. 1 Rhubarb
No. 2 Prepared aconite root
No. 3 Asarum herb

INDICATIONS: Syndrome of interior excess due to the accumulation of pathogenic cold, manifested as abdominal pain, constipation, hypochondriac pain, fever, cold limbs, white and greasy coating on the tongue, taut and tense pulse.
Besides, this recipe can be modified to deal with such cases as acute or chronic constipation accompanied with accumulation of pathogenic cold, acute appendicitis, intestinal obstruction ascribable to insufficient-cold type.

CAUTIONS:
1. Generally, the dosage of rhubarb should not exceed that of prepared aconite root.
2. If the administration of this recipe results in the relief of constipation, the patient can be pronounced to be out of danger; but if the patient does not respond well to the recipe marked by constipation, vomiting, cold limbs and thready pulse, it indicates that the patient is still in danger.

No. 1 Rhubarb

INDICATIONS: Syndrome due to accumulation of pathogenic heat with stagnancy of fluid or phlegm in the chest, manifested as fullness, pain and tenderness of the area from the epigastrium to the lower abdomen where the patient may feel too painful to be touched, constipation, mild tidal fever as well as restlessness and shortness of breath, thirst and dryness of the tongue, sunken, tense and forceful pulse.
Equally, this recipe can be modified to deal with inflammatory hydrothorax and ascites, acute edematous pancreatitis or severe cases of intestinal obstruction and others  which pertain to the accumulation of pathogenic heat with stagnancy of fluid or phlegm in the chest.

CAUTIONS:
1. The administration should be withdrawn immediately after thorough purgation is achieved; The secondary administration is necessary for those without thorough purgation. Since the recipe is indicated for the treatment of acute diseases, the prescribed dosage should be strictly observed to avoid impairment of the vital qi, but the pathogens should be purged promptly so as to prevent the persistence in the body.
2. The administration is prohibited for those with weak constitution or those who have just recovered from the illness and can not bear the drastic effect of the recipe.

INDICATIONS:
1. Excessive-heat syndrome of yangming-fu organ, manifested as constipation, frequent wind through the anus, feeling of fullness in the abdomen, abdominal pain with tenderness and guarding, tidal fever, delirium, polyhidrosis of hands and feet, prickled tongue with yellow dry fur or dry black tongue coating with fissures, deep and forceful pulse.
2. Syndrome of fecal impaction due to heat with watery discharge, manifested as watery discharge of terribly foul odor accompanied by abdominal distension and pain with tenderness and guarding, dry mouth and tongue, smooth and forceful pulse.
3. Cold limbs due to excess of heat, convulsion, mania and other symptoms belonging to excess syndrome of interior heat.
Equally, this recipe can be modified to deal with infectious or non-infectious febrile diseases in their climax marked by accumulation of heat type, and in the treatment of paralytic, simple and obliterative intestinal obstructions.

CAUTIONS:
1. Being a drastic recipe, it must be administered with great care to those of general asthenia, or to those whose external syndrome has not yet been relieved or to those with absence of dry stool in gastrointestinal tract.
2. The drastic effect of this recipe is harmful to the stomach-qi. So, immediate withdrawal is indicated once the effect attained. Over-administration is prohibited.
3. Never is it administered for pregnant women.

The recipe can be modified for the treatment of sunstroke, heat stroke, infantile summer fever as well as other infectious diseases occurring in the summer which are related to the injury of qi and body fluid by summer-heat.

CAUTIONS: It is not advisable for cases having summer heat with pathogenic dampness.

INDICATIONS: Steaming sensation in the bones and hectic fever due to yin-deficiency manifested by tidal fever in the afternoon or during the night, steaming sensation in the extremities, restlessness, emaciation, night sweat, flushing of cheeks, hot sensation in the palms and soles, reddened tongue with little or no coating, and thready and rapid pulse.
The recipe can be modified for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis as well as other chronic consumptive diseases related to the above syndrome.

CAUTIONS: The recipe has greater effect in reducing fever but weaker effect in nourishing yin, therefore, it is not advisable for cases with severe yin-deficiency and milder hectic fever.

INDICATIONS: Latent heat in the interior of the body, manifested by fever at night and normal in the morning, absence of perspiration after fever subsides, polyphagia with emaciation, reddened tongue with little coating and rapid pulse. 
The recipe is modified to deal with such diseases as pulmonary tubercolosis and other chronic consumptive diseases related to hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency.

CAUTIONS:
1. As Ingredient No.1 in the above recipe is not resistant to high temperature, it should not be decocted for too long. It may be infused in boiling water for oral administration.
2.It is not advisable for cases with tendency to convulsion due to yin-deficiency.

CAUTIONS: It is not advisable for cases with dysentery of deficiency type or chronic dysentery.

The recipe can be modified to treat acute enteritis, bacillary dysentery and other conditions indicative of damp-heat in the large intestine.

CAUTIONS: It is not advisable for cases with external syndromes at the onset of dysentery nor for those suffering from chronic dysentery or deficiency-cold dysentery.

INDICATIONS: Upward attack of excessive fire in the liver and gallbladder or downward flow of damp-heat from the liver channel manifested as headache, conjunctival congestion, hypochondriac pain, bitter taste, deafness, pain and bulge of ear; or marked by pruritus and swelling of vulva, impotence, polyhidrosis around the external genitals, stranguria with turbid urine, and damp-heat leukorrhagia.
Equally, the recipe can be modified to cure diseases marked by extreme fire in the liver and gallbladder, such as hypertension, vegetative nerve functional disturbance, acute conjunctivitis, acute otitis media, furuncle of nasal vestibule or furuncle of external auditory: canal, acute cholecystitis and acute hepatitis; and to deal with cases with downward flow of damp-heat as seen in acute infection in the urinary system, acute orchitis, epididymitis, acute eczema,. acute pelvic inflammation, acute prostatitis, vaginitis and herpes zoster.
CAUTIONS: Since most of the drugs in the recipe are bitter in flavour and cold in property, constant and long-term administration of it is not advisable. Great care should be taken when exhibiting the drugs for those whose spleen-stomach functions are weak, otherwise the stomach-qi might be easily hurt.

INDICATIONS: Infection with swollen head marked by chill and fever, flushed swollen face, heavy eyes, sore throat, dryness of the tongue, thirst, reddened tongue with yellow coating and rapid forceful pulse.
The modified recipe can be used for treatment of diseases with the above symptoms as seen in facial erysipelas, acute parotitis and tonsillitis, carbuncle and other infectious swelling in the face.
CAUTIONS: As the majority of the drugs are bitter and pungent in flavour and cold in nature, patients with yin-deficiency should be cautious when taking this recipe.

INDICATIONS: All the syndromes of fire-toxin by excessive heat or intense heat in the tri-warmer manifested by high fever, fidgetiness, dry mouth and lips, delirium, insomnia, hematemesis or epistaxis in the course of febrile diseases or skin eruptions due to intense heat, dysentery with fever, jaundice due to damp-heat, sore and carbuncle, deep-coloured urine, reddened tongue with yellow coating, and rapid and forceful pulse.
The recipe can also be modified to treat many other disorders. For example, influenza, encephalitis B, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, septicemia, pyogenic infection of skin, acute infectious hepatitis, acute gastroenteritis, bacillary dysentery, infection in the urinary tract, acute cholecystitis and others that belong to syndromes of fire-toxin and excessive heat, disorder of vegetative nervous function, menopausal syndrome, neurosis, insomnia, hypertension, stomatitis, toothache, and nervous gastritis which indicate the syndrome of intense heat in the heart and stomach or excessive fire in the liver and gallbladder; as well as various inflammatory bleedings or rashes.
CAUTIONS: The recipe is fit for cases with overabundance of heat-toxin in the tri-warmer but no impairment of the body fluid. So it is not advisable for those with injury of the body fluid by heat manifested as deep-red and uncoated tongue.

INDICATIONS: Intense heat and virulent pathogen in both qi and blood systems occurring in the course of epidemic infectious diseases manifested by high fever, thirst, severe headache, retching, restlessness, delirium, coma, skin eruption or hematemesis, epistaxis, convulsion or coldness of the extremities, sunken and rapid pulse or sunken fine and rapid pulse, or superficial and rapid pulse, and deep redness of the tongue with cracked lips.
In addition, the recipe can be modified to deal with septicemia, encephalitis B, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis or other febrile diseases with the above syndrome.
CAUTIONS: Being extremely cold in nature, the recipe must not be prescribed for those without exuberant and noxious heat.

INDICATIONS: Syndromes of invasion of the blood system by pathogenic heat which results in bleeding, manifested by hematemesis, epistaxis, hematuria, hemafecia, dark purple colour of rashes, deep-red tongue with prickle-like fur; or syndrome of blood retention marked by madness, a parched throat with a thirst for water, with water in the mouth but no desire to swallow it, distension in the lower abdomen, dark smooth stools.
The recipe can be modified to deal with cases whose blood system is affected by pathogenic heat, as seen in epidemic encephalitis B, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, typhus, epidemic hemorrhagic fever, acute yellow atrophy of liver, hepatic coma, septicemia, thrombocytopenic purpura and hemophilia.
CAUTIONS: It is contraindicated in cases with bleedings caused by deficiency of qi or with weakness of the spleen and stomach.

INDICATIONS: Invasion of the ying system by pathogenic heat manifested by feverish body which is aggravated in the night, delirium occuring now and then, insomnia due to vexation, or by faint skin rashes, deep-red and dry tongue and rapid pulse.
The recipe can also be modified to deal with ying-syndrome occuring in epidemic encephalitis B, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, septicemia and other infectious diseases.
CAUTIONS: Cases with white and slippery coating of the tongue which suggests invasion by pathogenic dampness should not use the recipe in case it encourages pathogenic dampness.

No. 4 Ophiopogon root

INDICATIONS: Lingering heat with impairment of both the qi and body fluid in the later stage of exogenous febrile disease, epidemic febrile disease and summer-heat disease, marked by feverish body, hyperhidrosis, general debility and short breath, irritability, inclination to vomit, dry mouth and fond·ε ness of drink, or insomnia due to restlessness, reddened, tongue with little coating, and rapid pulse.
The recipe can also be modified to deal with cases with deficiency of both qi and yin occuring in the later stage of influenza, epidemic encephalitis B, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, pneumonia and septicemia.
CAUTIONS: It is not advisable for cases with febrile disease when the vital energy is dominating with pathogens prevailing, or excessive heat existing in the body, or neither qi nor yin being impaired.

INGREDIENTS:
No. 1 Gypsum
No. 2 Wind-weed rhizome
No. 3 Prepared Licorice root
No. 4 Polished round-grained nonglutinous rice
INDICATIONS: Yangming channel diseases (excessive heat syndrome in yangming channels and qi system) marked by high fever, flushed face, polydipsia, profuse perspiration, aversion to heat and full forceful pulse.
The recipe can be modified to deal with influenza, epidemic encephalitis B, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, pneumonia and septicemia indicating excessive heat syndrome in the qi system, and also with the treatment of stomatitis, periodontitis, gastritis, diabetes and others which pertain to stomach heat syndrome.
CAUTIONS: It is not advisable for those whose exterior syndrome is not relieved, nor for those who have fever due to blood-deficiency or cold syndrome with pseudo-heat symptoms.

No. 2 Chinese green onion

INDICATIONS: Original yin-deficiency with re-affection due to exopathogen, manifested by headache, fever, light aversion to wind-cold, dry throat with cough, sputum too viscous to be coughed out, absence of sweat or little sweat, thirst and restlessness, reddened tongue and rapid pulse.
Moreover, the recipe can be modified to deal with the common cold, influenza, bronchitis and others that indicate exopathic disease as due to yin deficiency with re-affection by exopathogens after giving birth or bleeding.
CAUTIONS: This recipe is only advisable for exogenous diseases with yin deficiency; it is contraindicated in cases without yin deficiency.

INDICATIONS: Exopathic diseases caused by weakened body resistance and pathogenic wind-cold-dampness, manifested as loathing of cold with high fever, headache and stiffness of the neck, soreness of the extremities, absence of perspiration, stuffy nose with low speaking voice, fullness and stuffiness in the chest, white and greasy coating of the tongue, floating and soft pulse which turns faint on hard pressure, etc.
The modified recipe can be adapted for the treatment of the common cold, influenza, epidemic parotitis, bronchitis, chronic rheumatic arthritis, urticaria, eczema and pyesis in its primary stage and other diseases that belong to the type of deficiency of genuine energy and attack of exogenous wind­cold-dampness on the body surface.
CAUTIONS: On account of its being warm and dry in property, the recipe is indicated for cases affected by exogenous wind-cold-dampness complicated with general deficiency, but it is not fit for those whose pathogens are dampness-heat.

No. 10 Fresh ginger

INDICATIONS: Affection due to exogenous pathogenic wind-cold with heat in the interior resulting from stagnated pathogens, manifested as slight aversion to cold, high fever, headache, soreness and pain in the extremities, eye pain, dry nose, orbit pain, restlessness, insomnia, thin and yellowish coating of the tongue, and superficial and slightly full pulse.
Besides, other cases ascribed to the above syndrome such as the common cold, influenza, bronchitis and toothache can be dealt with the modified recipe.
CAUTIONS:
1. The recipe is contraindicated in patients with symptoms of exterior wind-cold but without interior heat.
2. The recipe should not be administered for cases associated with yangming fu-organ disease marked by abdominal pain and constipation.
